One day while meeting with a client, a most unusual event occurred. I was working with a wealthy young man from Hawaii and we were in his newly built mansion. We were supposed to be working on a design for his new estate, but he offered to take me on a tour of his new mansion. It was unbelievable to say the least.

The tour began on the first floor. He showed me the spacious rooms and luxurious amenities. He was especially proud of the vast deck with gazebo that overlooked a manmade pond in his backyard. He said he was going to stock the pond with goldfish.

We went upstairs and he showed me the breathtaking views out the windows of this mansion—views that extended into the ocean. Each room had high ceilings and magnificent fixtures. The tour ended in his library where this wealthy young man said he would line the mahogany shelves with his book collection.

Amazed by everything, I asked him a question. I said, “How do you afford all this luxury and beauty?”

He looked at me and said, “Hard work and frugal living.”

I responded by saying, “You’re too young to have worked and saved enough money to afford all this. I’ve never seen a house or property like this. It reminded me of a massive church or institution when I arrived. There is no way I could work hard and save enough money to live like this. There must be something more to your story.”

The wealthy young man looked at me in silence. He put his finger over his mouth and thought for a few moments. When he was done thinking he said, “Do you really want to be rich and successful?”

I nodded yes. A few moments later I said, “Yes I do. I’ve imagined being rich and successful, but for some reason riches and success elude me.”

“Ah,” said the wealthy young man. “Come back here Sunday afternoon. If you see my car in the driveway it means I’m here. If I’m not here when you arrive, wait for me. The workers will not be here Sunday. I will reveal my success secret then.”

I agreed and said goodbye. I walked out the entryway and down the stairs to my car and drove away. I would have to wait nearly a week to hear this wealthy man’s secret. The anticipation was almost unbearable.

The week passed slowly, but Sunday finally arrived and I went to the wealthy man’s house. He was not there. I walked around the outside of his mansion wondering if he would show up and divulge his success secret.

After twenty minutes I realized he was not going to show up. It was getting cold outside and I decided to leave. I walked to my car and was about to get in when I saw a car driving down the road. I stood next to my car and waited. Sure enough, it was the wealthy young man driving his new luxury car. He drove into his driveway and got out of the car. He invited me into his mansion and we went into the library. He was carrying a box with him as we entered the library.

He told me to have a seat and he opened the box. While I sat down, he removed books from the box and started lining the shelf with books.

“So,” he said, “You’re here to learn the secret of my success?”

“That’s right.” I said eagerly.

He said, “You don’t believe hard work and saving money is the secret to great wealth?”

I replied, “I think work and savings are fine, but I could never acquire something as magnificent as this mansion just through hard work and saving money. I would have to save money for fifty lifetimes to afford a place like this. There must be something I’m missing.”

The wealthy man said, “Tell me how you have tried to become successful.”

I said, “I’ve tried everything. I’ve tried hard work, saving money, going to college, working in the professions, sales and starting my own businesses.”

The wealthy young man said, “And what was the result?”

I said, “You wouldn’t believe it; I have consistently repelled success! I’m not kidding. The harder I work, the poorer I become. After working hard for many years, I am broke, deeply in debt, alone and without prospects for success.”

The wealthy man laughed.

I said, “What’s so funny? I don’t understand why I repel success. And now you’re laughing! It’s easy for you to laugh; you’ve got all this wealth. But me, I’ve got nothing.”

The wealthy man said, “I’m not laughing at you. You just remind me of someone I know well.”

I said, “Who?”

The wealthy man said, “You remind me of myself a few years ago. I was like you; I didn’t have anything in my life except disappointments. The harder I worked to achieve my dreams, the more losses I experienced. Then I almost lost my life in pursuit of my dreams. It was at that point a few years ago that I had enough. I decided to quit pursuing my dreams.”

I said, “How did you become an outstanding success if you gave up your dreams?”

The wealthy man said, “I quit everything and resigned myself to poverty.”

I said, “Then what happened?”

The wealthy man said, “I had to get away from it all, so I took a vacation to India. It was during this time that I met a medicine man.”

I said, “A medicine man? What did he tell you?”

The wealthy man said, “Noticing my unhappiness, he asked me what was wrong. I described my situation, telling him I was at a dead-end in my life. I said that success was beyond my reach and I had resigned myself to being poor for the rest of my life.”

I said, “What did he say after that?”

The wealthy man said, “He told me I had an illness.”

I said, “An illness?”

The wealthy man said, “Yes, he said I had an illness. He said my illness was not physical but spiritual. He went on to say I was repelling success because of my illness.”

I said, “A spiritual illness? That sounds profound.”

The wealthy man said, “Yes it was. The medicine man said he had a cure for my illness.”

I said, “What cure? Maybe I should take that cure!”

The wealthy man said, “The medicine man picked up a white bottle. He read the label and told me the cure was in the white bottle. He said all I needed to do was take the pills in the white bottle and I would be cured. Success would be mine—guaranteed.”

I said, “Wow! So what happened next?”

The wealthy man said, “The medicine man sold me the white bottle of pills. He said the bottle contained success pills. I didn’t know if they would actually work, but he guaranteed their effectiveness so I decided to try them.”

I said, “That sounds fascinating. Did you take the pills?”

The wealthy man said, “Yes I did. But after I bought the bottle of pills, I realized they were much different than ordinary pills.”

I said, “Please tell me more.”

The wealthy man said, “Okay. I went back to my hotel room and opened the bottle. What I discovered was slips of paper in the shape of pills. Each pill contained writing. Shocked, I read the label on the bottle and it said to take a different pill each day for six days. After three weeks success was guaranteed. Do you want to know what each pill said?”

I said, “Yes.”

The wealthy man said, “The first pill said REALITY. Below this word it said to pay attention to reality everyday to know what is happening in life. Once I know what is happening, I can figure out exactly what to do.”

I said, “What about the other pills? What did they say?”

The wealthy man said, “The second pill said GOALS. Below this word it said to identify my most important goals in life. Once I know precisely what I am going to do in life, magic will start happening.”

I said, “And the third pill?”

The wealthy man said, “The third pill said PASSION. Below this word it said I must work toward goals that infuse me with passion. Once I have passion, this will spread to other people and they will want to help me rather than hinder me.”

I said, “How about the fourth pill?”

The wealthy man said, “The fourth pill said FOCUS. Below this word it said I must focus on my goals to the exclusion of all distractions. By staying focused on my goals, I will harness my conscious power into a laser-like tool that cuts through all obstacles.”

I said, “What did the fifth pill say?”

The wealthy man said, “The fifth pill said ACTION. Below this word it said I must take action everyday until I achieve my goals. Action builds momentum and gets things done. Once I know what I am going to do, action is imperative.”

I said, “And what about the sixth pill?”

The wealthy man said, “The sixth pill said ENJOYMENT. Below this word it said that after achieving a goal I should take time to enjoy my achievement. Enjoyment is the reward for my effort and it provides fuel for further achievements.”

I said, “What happened after you took all six pills?”

The wealthy man said, “I left India and went back to Hawaii. When I returned I felt like a new man. It was then that I realized I was cured. I no longer had a spiritual illness. I identified reality, set goals, developed passion, focused on my goals, took action and enjoyed each step of the way. Today I’m CEO of a worldwide enterprise. I have a beautiful wife, good friends, millionaire wealth and all the goodies I ever wanted. I am living the life of my dreams without the struggle and disappointments I used to experience daily.”

I said, “That is inspiring. Maybe I should take these pills.”

The wealthy man said, “Only you can decide. But I can tell you this: if you want to live a successful life without all the struggle and disappointments, then I recommend taking these success pills. They cured my spiritual illness and allowed success to enter my life. They can do the same for you.”
